How can I use my domain name? So, assuming you have used our domain name search to identify just the domain(s) that you want, and breezed through the simple domain registration process then you are ready to get started with choosing your email set up, do you want email mailboxes or email forwarding? Both have advantages and disadvantages depending on your goals, and you can always opt for a mix of both! The email for my domain is sorted, now what?Next you need web hosting. Web hosting is basically space on one of our servers, as your needs grow you may opt for colocation, but to begin with, shared hosting space will be fine. Think of the web hosting as a plot of land, your domain name is the address by which your mail and your visitors will find you, your hosting spce is where you can build your house, well, website in this case! Domain, check, email, check, hosting check... HTML who?The basic building structure of any website is done in HTML. HTML is basically a series of markers in text that tell internet browsers how to display the information, for example if you wanted to make some text bold, you could simply put the 'b' tags around it like so: <b>bold text</b> which would display like: bold text. Sadly, we do not have the resources to produce an exhaustive guide to HTML or web design, but a quick search on your favourite search engine will produce thousands, if not millions of sites with guides and tips. Okay, I got myself a website, and some web hosting... but how to get the two together? To introduce your website to your web hosting, you need an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client. These nifty pieces of software can connect to our servers and magically transport (upload) the files of your website to our server. Then your website will be on the internet! I got myself a website... but nobody is visiting! The next part is described in more detail in our article marketing your website, good luck with your new website! |
